Excerpts of a short interview:

What as per you are the strengths of the two shipyards of L&T at Hazira and Kattupalli vis a vis competition ?

The greenfield shipyard put up by L&T at Kattupalli near Chennai is specifically designed for construction and refits of defence vessels.  It is designed for modular construction, reducing cycle time. Most of the construction is undertaken inside covered shops, enhancing productivity.

The yard has an in-house designed and constructed  shiplift with wet berths and dry berths.  This feature enables simultaneous construction / refit of multiple vessels. Then there is very good support industry around Chennai

L&T has dedicated Warship Design Centre which evolves designs for new construction as well as provides design support for refits.  The Design Centre is equipped with state of the art modern digital aids.  Designs for Interceptor Boats, Offshore Patrol Vessels, Floating Dock etc have been evolved by the Centre.

Alongside, L&T produces in-house a wide range of marine equipment, has a sound financial strength, excels in project management skills besides an excellent team of experience professionals.

How well are the two facilities at Hazira and Kattupalli placed in terms of meeting the orders coming from the defence and commercial space.

L&T’s Hazira shipyard is designed for construction of low draft vessels.  With a side launch facility, the yard is fully equipped with all facilities for new construction of vessels.  Multi purpose heavy lift vessels and semi-submersible vessels have been constructed here.  The facility is also used for serial production of Interceptor Boats for Coast Guard.

The Kattupalli yard is designed for undertaking both new construction as well as refits of warships and submarines.  The maximum draft of the channel is 16 m.  Spread over an area of 1225 acres, the yard has a long waterline of 2.2 km

Both yards together have ample capacity to take on emerging defence and commercial opportunities.

What are the major orders that are expected by your company in the Defence shipping space in particular. Also the opportunities on the exports front?

Two major bids, one for 2 Landing Platform Docks and another for 8 Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft are under processing and the commercial bids are likely to be opened shortly by MoD. Two more bids, for 4 Survey Vessels and 2 Diving Support Vessels have been submitted recently.

In addition, Indian Navy has intentions to acquire 6 New Generation Missile Vessels and 7 New Generation Corvettes, both programs of high value.  RFPs for Survey Training Vessel, Multi Purpose Vessels, etc are also anticipated in Medium term.

Then there is also good business opportunity in Refits of Naval and CG vessels.

As far as exports are concerned, L&T has recently got a prestigious order for export of fast speed vessels to Vietnam.  We are looking for more opportunities, particularly from the Eastern side.
