Quad a ‘small clique’ intended to target China, says Beijing

By Times of India

Describing the Quad mechanism as a “small clique” intended to target China, Beijing on Wednesday said India knew what’s Quad meant for. Beijing also said Quad was being used to sow discord between China and other countries in the region.

“We all know what kind of mechanism the Quad is. China opposes certain countries’ efforts to form an exclusive clique, portray China as a challenge, and sow discord between regional countries and China,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said, adding that India knew its intention more clearly.

Hua was responding to a query on remarks by Chinese ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jiming warning Dhaka against joining the Quad.

“Isn’t it intended as a small clique against China? Remarks expressing opposition to this mechanism are not about interference but about expressing opposition to small cliques and bloc politics. They also reflect the aspiration for maintaining regional peace and stability,” Hua said.

Li’s remarks were described as “very unfortunate” and “aggressive” by Bangladeshi foreign minister A K Abdul Momen on Tuesday.

Asked for her reaction to Momen’s comments, Hua said she had not seen the remarks.
