India, Saudi Arabia carry out naval exercise in Persian Gulf

By India Today

The Indian and Saudi Arabian navies on Wednesday carried out a joint exercise in the Persian Gulf. The Indian Navy deployed its warship INS Talwar for the ‘PASSEX’ (Passage Exercise) while the Saudi Arabian Navy was represented by the Royal Saudi Naval Force Ship HMS Khalid.

The Indian Navy said the INS Talwar is currently deployed in the Gulf Region for Operation Sankalp and had arrived in Jubail Port, Saudi Arabia, on April 3.

The Indian Navy commenced maritime security operations named Operation Sankalp, in the Gulf Region on June 19, 2019 to ensure safe passage of Indian flag vessels transiting through the Strait of Hormuz.

The deployment was done against the backdrop of the deteriorating security situation in the Gulf region, post attacks on merchant ships in the Gulf of Oman in June 2019.

PASSEXs are conducted regularly by the Indian Navy with units of friendly foreign navies, whilst visiting each other’s ports or during rendezvous at sea.
