Another push for self-reliance or Atmanirbhar Bharat is on the cards at the Defence Acquisition Council meeting tomorrow with the purchase of 118 Arjun tanks on the agenda.

The DAC, headed by the Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh and including the Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat, and the three chiefs of the armed forces, are expected to clear the purchase of 118 Arjun Mark 1A tanks, valued at over Rs 6,000 crore.

The tanks, with over 50 modifications as per the requirement of the Indian Army, will be provided over the next eight years. This is a big moment for the Defence Research and Development Organization or DRDO, which has designed the tank.

The Army already has the Arjun tank, this being a repeat order. But the Russian designed T-90 continues to be the weapon of choice for the mechanised forces as the main battle tank.

Meanwhile, as a special measure, the INS Sindhu Ghosh, a submarine with the Navy, is likely to be refitted in India.

Mistral missile for air-defence
Also on the agenda is a proposal for Mistral air-defence missiles for the Army and the Indian Air Force. Altogether 465 missiles are to be acquired, about 250 for the army and the rest for the air force for about Rs 1,700 crore from BMDA.
